This project was born out of a need to make sense of the archive - to see more clearly. Yallourn is a 20th century story. A tribute to modernism and model living. A time capsule of optimism. The rise and rise of consumerism. The rise and fall of a community.

They use these special powers to invent games and play tricks on each other, but with these powers come unforseen unintentional consequences. Written and directed by Van Sowerwine. Animated by Isobel Knowles.

Amy and Billy are 9 and 7 year old siblings. They live in the inner suburbs of a large Australian city, and are like most children except for one thing: they share a special power. Their arms, legs and heads can all be detached and placed on each other’s bodies. This power also extends to their large, shaggy dog Sniffy, leading to all sorts of strange combinations of bodies! Every afternoon Amy, Billy and Sniffy go to the park and play. They use their special powers to entertain each other as well as to play tricks…

A new animated series of 15 x 1 minute interstitials from writer/director Van Sowerwine and animator Isobel Knowles, the team behind the award-winning Clara. Developed by the AFC.
W/D Van Sowerwine. Animator Isobel Knowles. 13 x 1mins. 2008.

Warm Blood is a raw, incendiary, daring vision of love between a brother and his sister. Brutally frank in its portrayal of sex and exposing an inner urban world rife with counter-cultural insight, Amiel Courtin-Wilson’s uncompromising debut feature hails from the depths of post Generation-X, from the golden age of neglect.

All Sam cares about is partying to within an inch of his life, being able to get an erection every now and then and his precious family of pet snakes.

A 20-something, charming neurotic small time dealer, Sam lives amongst a graffiti scarred maze of housing projects and industrial sprawl in Melbourne’s working class west.
Blurring his days and nights with a motley collection of clients, Sam’s surrogate family are Chilean stoners, Vietnamese ravers, African hip-hop kids and a volatile mix of petty criminals.

When Lana, a beautiful and headstrong teenage girl turns up on his doorstep, Sam wants nothing to do with her. But Lana shares a past with Sam and she refuses to leave. As Lana settles in, cooking and washing to earn her keep, she roams the house wearing not much more than a singlet, and the sexual tension between them bubbles dangerously to the surface.

When Sam gets a phone call warning him not to repeat his past mistakes, he hurtles into a crystal meth binge that leaves him hospitalised and an emotional wreck. Lana nurses Sam back to health and for a brief moment the two co-exist in a semblance of normality. Sam even lets her tag along with him to his most cherished place- the reptile enclosure at the city zoo.

Yet Sam can’t stay away from old habits and he endangers himself with another bout of amphetamines. He awakens to find his stash stolen and in a maelstrom of panic, Sam must now find the thief; recover his drugs; and pay back his debts- all while trying to maintain his role as everybody’s friendly neighbourhood dealer.

When Sam blunders all attempts to get his life back and Lana is attacked, Sam has no choice but to seek brutal revenge.

In the aftermath Sam finds he no longer has the strength to resist Lana’s allure and the two finally collide in a delirious sexual encounter.

Locked in an embrace amongst the rubble of their former lives, theirs is a lifelong love, bound by blood and desire- the love between a brother and his sister.

Warm Blood is currently financing, with a budget around $AUD1,000,000. Seeking investment from AFC’s IndiVision Production Funding (February 2007); Film Victoria’s Production Funding; Private Investment; Local Distributor’s Advance; and Sales Agent’s Advance.

Warm Blood has been developed by Film Victoria and the AFC.
Written and directed by Amiel Courtin-Wilson
85 mins. Super16mm/35mm. Production, July 2007
